The Practice
West View has 5 doctors working in
partnership from modern premises. We
are assisted by a team of Practice
Nurses, Health Visitors, District
Nurses and Administrative Staff. We
are also a Training Practice and
often have experienced doctors
working with us for six months a
year.
Practice Philosophy
At a time when the NHS and general
practice in particular is undergoing
great changes, the partners and
staff wish to retain the traditional
values of a family doctor based
health service.
We want to continue providing a
personal family doctor service. We
will continue to do home visits
where appropriate and are happy to
discuss any aspect of your condition
and treatment by appointment.
We intend to keep abreast of
developments in treatment and
management of health problems and
will refer you for consultant
opinion and treatment whenever it is
appropriate.
We will provide you with advice on
promoting better health in the
future by advising on life style and
by targeting those of our patients
with special needs.
We will ensure a continuing high
standard of medical care with
education and training for all
staff. This will include continued
medical and nursing education for
medical and nursing staff,
management training for the doctors
and managerial staff, and training
for all other staff who are involved
in providing this service.
Although there are at present a
rapid series of changes in general
practice which are increasing the
pressures on us, we all remain
committed to the pursuit of
excellence. To this end we are
always pleased to receive
suggestions for improving the
service.
History
The West View Surgery can trace its
origins to Dr Claude Harrison and
his surgery in the High Street.
Claude was a colourful and eccentric
character, much loved by his
patients. Forty years later he is
still remembered by many with great
affection and his service to the
community is commemorated by the
ward named after him at Keynsham
Hospital.
In 1954 the surgery moved
to West View Road occupying an old
nursing home and the list expanded
steadily over the years. In 1983 a
branch surgery was built at Severn
Way to serve those patients on the
other side of Keynsham who did not
have their own transport. But, by
the late 1990’s, with the list
having grown to 5800 patients, it
became apparent that the old main
surgery had become far from ideal
for a busy, modern, general practice
and the decision was taken to
develop new premises.
The project
was to take nearly two years but, on
18 December 2000, the practice moved
into its splendid new purpose-built
premises in Park Road.
Today, we
care for just over 6700 patients.
