Keeping Healthy –
Staying Healthy
Sensible Drinking
A small amount of alcohol may even
do you good but if it’s more than a
small amount you may be damaging
your health.
Alcohol is measured in units – one
unit is 10 grams of alcohol and is
found in:
• Half a pint of beer
• Less than half a pint of export
beer, lager or strong cider
(a 440 ml can of cider = 2.3 units)
• A small glass of wine (a 75 cl
bottle contains between 7 and 9
units)
• A small sherry (a 75 cl bottle =
13 units)
• A pub single measure of spirits (a
75 cl bottle of whiskey = 28 units)
Only you really know how many units
you drink. Be fair to yourself and
your family – stay within healthy
limits. For men, a sensible limit is
up to 28 units a week. For women the
limit is 21 units a week.
Stop Smoking Advice
The Practice has trained advisors who
can support and meet with patients
wanting to quit smoking. We will aim
to book an appointment as soon as
possible so when you are ready to
quit you will not have to wait to
commence the programme. Please speak
to a member of reception staff for
information.
Drug Abuse
A service is provided to registered
patients who have a problem with
drug abuse. The doctors work in
conjunction with the Community Drug
Service. Please see a doctor
initially if you need help. This
service is also offered to those
with alcohol problems.
